With the ICA letters coming in is not hard to get lost in the sea of acceptance announcements tweets and Facebook post. This years I won't be writing one. I'm not sad about it, rejection is a normal part of academic life.
Unfortunately, rejections, struggles and setbacks are rarely talked about beyond frustrated conversations among collages, and confidential therapy sessions. We don't talk about it in the classroom,we quickly mention it on grad student workshops and move on. There are multiple possible reasons for this, first, talking about rejection and failing requires a vulnerability few of us are ready to show. Second, grad school and the academic environment in general fosters a kind of "performative toughness" that discourages us to talk about our more personal struggles. Thirdly, we are insecure AF, rejection only increases impostor syndrome, specially among minorities.
So today I take this space to create a crack in my cycle and present to you a different version of my CV, one that has the stumbles that the glossy interview CV hides. (Alternatively, you can look my successes and other stuff here)
